TRianThology Site Updated with Opening Video

Trianthology’s website has updated with a PV and tons of other stuff, including character portraits and bios. The VN will be coming out just next month, on August 28th.

Let me try my best to unpack this:

  • 0:10 The “reflective shards” visualization is very reminiscent of Higurashi Hou’s OP. I imagine this will tie into the whole “Sea of Kakera/Fragments” world view of the When They Cry games.
  • 0:25: Chess pieces? Could this mysterious Alice be engaged in another meta-world game?
  • 0:45: OK, so it looks like all these stories are gonna get pretty dark. Even the harem one.trt pv cap
  • 0:51: Gorillas making peace with man-kind? What sort of Planet of the Apes scenario is this? From the Gallery section of the site, it looks like this is an actual plot point from the sci-fi story.
  • 0:56: And then, random Bernkastel. The character Saijyouji Karen also looks a lot like Beatrice Some other characters not shown previously flash by the screen in a blur after this, as well.

The song is pretty sweet, and it’s good to see we’re still keeping composers from Umineko and Higanbana (xaki).

All the English text is from “Alice in Wonderland”:

All in the golden afternoon …
How doth the little crocodile …
Fury said to a mouse, That …

“You are old, Father William” …
Speak roughly to your little boy…
“Will you walk a littler faster?” …
Twinkle, twinkle little bat…

Tis the voice of the lobster, …
Turtle Soup
The Queen of Hearts

They told me you had been to her…

TRianThology Official Site Updated

07th Expansion’s official site for TRianthology has just updated, with story descriptions, characters, and more.

trianthology splash page

We now finally know the official name of all three stories:

Vespio 2438: A far-future science fiction war story. Most likely written by Ryukishi07, since its character art is clearly by him.

Country Girl: A story about high school friends who went on a school trip together, eventually dispersed, but then came back together. Written by Romeo Tanaka and currently being serialized as a manga online.

Gakuen Renai: Set in a galge-like world, with a protagonist who’s very popular with the ladies (incoming trope inversion?)

One other piece of excellent news: the staff page includes musicians from previous 07th Expansion games like Dai, Pre-holder, xaki, and M. Zakky (though still no zts). Because really, these games wouldn’t be half as good without their soundtrack.

It’s interesting how the different stories use totally different character artists (unless Vespio’s outlines are just a placeholder?) I’ll probably be the only person disappointed that Ryukishi07 isn’t drawing all of it. It makes me wonder how all the stories will end up coming together, though. I did notice that the protagonist of Country Girl has a shirt with a stopwatch and rabbit design,  clearly related to the whole Alice in Wonderland theme the game hints at.

So There’s A Free Online Manga of TRianThology’s First Story

I just learned today that 07th Expansion is releasing a manga adaption of a story from their upcoming game, TRianThology, for free online. It’s part of a collaboration between 07th Expansion and Nico Nico Seiga, the manga side of Japanese website Niconico, which is better known for online videos and tons of bizarre memes.

country girl

As we learned at last year’s ACen Panel, TRianThology will be made up of three linked stories:

  • School friends from the country drifting apart after moving to new places, and then coming back together.
  • A science fiction war story.
  • A galge-like setting ala To Heart.

It looks like this manga, titled Country Girl, is based on the first story. Despite Ryukishi07’s other forays into manga, it’s clear that TRianThology will definitely still be a game, since the artist’s comments hope we can “look forward to the game while reading leisurely.”

The 1st and 2nd chapters are posted now on Nico Nico Seiga, and it says that new chapters will be posted on the third Thursday of each month. Unfortunately, it’s only in Japanese so far, though it’s just begging for a fan translation. Skimming through the 72 pages posted so far, it reminds me a bit of Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day. Sort of an “alas, the care free innocence of our youth has been replaced by such jaded cynicism” sort of plot. This is the story written by Tanaka Romeo, so maybe it’ll get as a dark as A Drug That Makes You Dream did (not the best VN out there, but a nostalgic gateway drug for me!).

Finally, a Video Recording of Ryukishi07’s ACen Panel

After much searching online, I’ve finally found a video recording of Ryukishi07’s third panel at ACen! It was posted by a user on the Fuwanovel forums. Although there’s no recording for the other two panels, this one probably went over the most interesting information. So if you’re ready for some Ryukishi07 goodness, sit back and enjoy.

Cool little note: The guy asking a question at 2:59 in the 2nd video is me! Ryukishi07 was really cool about it. Although I’m just now realizing the interpreter probably misheard “death” when I send “depth”…ah well, it makes sense both ways.

Part 3

If you still want a chance to see Ryukishi07 in person, he’ll be a guest at AnimeExpo this July.

ACen 2015 07th Expansion Panel #3: Ryukishi07’s Latest Work TRianThology Unraveled for the First Time

ACen 2015 has now come to a close, and it was a great time. At times it felt like we were having a little mini-07th Expansion festival!

Ryukishi07 held 3 panels, one one each day of the convention. I’ll be posting write-ups of each of the panels in reverse order. I wanted to start with the 3rd panel from today, since it had some of the most tantalizing new info.

Since Ryukishi07 couldn’t take as many audience questions as he’d hoped to in the previous panels, he started this one with a Q&A. He got permission to run the panel long to field even more question’s before revealing more information about his upcoming work TRianThology and another mysterious new unannounced project.

07th Expansion Announces New Work on April Fool’s Day, Possibly Not (?) A Joke

Visitors to 07th Expansion’s Japanese site are being greeted with an image announcing a new work, Tri-Anthology.

ent150401According to the image, Ryukishi07 will be once again collaborating with Romeo Tanaka and Tonokawa Yuuto (of Key/Visual Arts) on it. He’s worked with them previously on the VN Rewrite.

Readers might want to take this with a grain of salt, since it’s already April Fool’s Day in Japan. Still, this announcement fits perfectly with the “science fiction” work Ryukishi07 was originally planning to release last winter Comiket, in December 2014. The translated teaser for that work states:

“And now, for a tale of the future.

Three worlds draw a spiral. Who is it at that lies at the end?

One world exists in the distant future. The General Earth Alliance advances into outer space. Past the sun, they voyage into the depths of the Milky Way.

Now, can you see the tiny fireworks flickering in the depths of space?

Those tiny fireworks, they are the light of the 200 pentillion warships from both sides of the UA$ galactic war fleet, sunk in space warfare that has endured from the beginning of civilization. Both sides, having amassed immense losses from war in the depths of space, avoid galactic conflict. Several colonial planets, last thought of in a time before the Galactic Century, shall be entrusted to become the location for the war’s skirmishes.

Coming in Winter 2014!”

Three worlds…three writers. Tri-Anthology. It makes a bit too much sense for a prank.

ryukishi07 sfThe new image has the same character as in that teaser, but with a different costume. It looks like it’ll involve characters traveling between three different words, with one science fiction, and another fantasy reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland. What’s next? The real world? A hellish nightmare of horror?

It reminds me of Aliens, in which one prominent designer did all designs for humans locations and technology, while another did everything related to xenomorphs (of course, it’s H.R. Giger they actually remember!) I look forward to seeing how their different authorial visions will comingle and conflict.

UPDATE: It’s been confirmed to be real, and is listed as “Coming Soon” on its new site.
